We are looking for essays from therians to be included in a publication, tentatively titled Under the Skin: Therian Community Voices. The goal of this project is to compile written works by therians or animalistic otherkin which describe their experiences with therianthropy/animality.

If you have essays, stories, or poetry about your animality, or on topics such as shifting, phantom limbs, discovering your theriotype, species dysphoria, or anything else pertaining to your therianthropy, please consider submitting them for this publication.

Nominations are also welcome if there is an essay or poem written by someone else which you would like to suggest to us to potentially include in this work.

Submission requirements:

The topic of the work must pertain to therianthropy or experiences of animality from therians and otherkin.
The work should be creative and original; consider what makes this experience unique to you, as we want to share a wide variety of experiences and voices.
The work must be completed to a relatively polished degree. Please check for grammar, spelling and continuity. If you have a learning difference or if English is not your first language, or if for any other reason you need assistance bringing your writing to a higher level of craft, contact us - we can help.
Works of up to 5,000 words in length will be accepted.
The author must be available to be contacted for copy-editing.
You may submit as many works as you wish; however, only two pieces per person will be selected for inclusion.
Please list an author name you would like to go by for your accepted submissions.
The deadline for submissions is July 15, 2013.

To submit your work or someone else’s, or to ask any questions about this project, please email it to yourdeermails@gmail.com, or post to the “Under the Skin” subforum in the “Werelist Media Center” section of the Werelist forums, making a new thread for each submission.

Just a quick question: for how long will you be collecting written works?

Feel free to sift through this document: http://www.werelist.net/forums/showthread.php?t=30627&highlight=KAPS for a useful chunk.

It was written as a cheat sheet for an oral (radio) interview, so it's more conversational in tone. I kept meaning to rewrite and organize it into a more academic format, but lack the time. The chatty tone might actually work better for this project however and be more accessible.

Hmm, I have so many therianthropy writings I honestly am not sure which ones to go with for this. I'm definitely interested in submitting one or two writings, but if anyone has particular preference for which one(s) they'd like to see in this book, please let me know. I'll let this project's team know when I've chosen them and I'll go through my given pieces to revise and edit them.

Yayyy I'm totally gonna submit my stuffs. Not sure which ones would be best though. :s

Is it all just non-fiction, or can we make some realistic fiction?

I think we're going for a more 'this is what therians experience' feel, so non-fiction only please.

Kay, just checking. I figured, though... Couldn't hurt to ask.

Also, can I write something about my cameo shifts since I'm a shapeshifter? (Non-physically, of course)

@ Lindiel: The deadline for entry is July 15th.

@ Kara: Cameo shift writings would be great - shapeshifter/polytherian stuff is still animalistic/therian, so it falls in the category just fine in my book.

@ Savage: I think the "personal experiences" section might work really nicely for this. Thanks. :)

I might consider submitting my essay about my personal Therianthropy that I've written here: http://www.werelist.net/forums/showthread.php?t=30521

I need to review it again and make some updates first.

I like to share therianthropy experiences, and I love to write! I'd be happy to participate.

I could look around at my old stuff and see if anything's appropriate. How do I submit? Just post it here?

I have a piece I would like to share, it's very brief and I'm not 100% sure but it may be a memory from a dream shift I had. Would that be ok to submit?

@ Raqui - yep, posting here works!
@ Violet - I think it's worth a shot.

Feel free to let me know which of my writings from the past decade would be the most appropriate for this project, I'm not sure which to pick:

Thank you for your help.

I guess I have a nomination :)
I really enjoy Absurdism's essay on 'Pack' (http://www.absurdism.org/therianthropy/pack.html). I know it's one of the oldest essays on there, and few/most of the others are probably better thought out and written, but that essay rings with me. In a more original/newer strain, I love Universals (http://www.absurdism.org/therianthropy/universals.html). But to be honest, I really love all the essays on that site, and if I could nominate them all I would do, so if a single Absurdism essay gets put in there I'll be very, very happy.
And of course, I love Ahkila's essays, and I love some of the guest essays on there too, especially Feathers by Meirya

I'm not sure if you were planning on contacting most of the owners/writers of therianthropic blogs, I kind of assumed you would end up doing so because they're pretty darn brilliant, but I thought I'd mention these guys anyway :)

I've been thinking about nominations as well.
One of my favorites, and one of the first therian essays I read, is Merf's "Growing Up Beastly" - here: http://animal-quills.dreamwidth.org/6027.html
I am not sure how reachable the author is, but I do adore this essay and would love to see it in the collection.

I might have an e-mail address for Merf. I'll PM it to you (I'm not sure it's still valid though).

If you happen to have a contact, that would be great as I'm not finding any active accounts of Merf's on LJ or DW.

I'd like to submit my essays on extinction (http://www.werelist.net/forums/showthread.php?t=26403) and my personal therianthropy (http://www.werelist.net/forums/showthread.php?t=29069), if they fit what you're looking for.

The second one fits and is well written. The first would need a rewrite for a more consistent 'voice' and clearer structure.

I think I've settled on at least one writing I'd like to suggest, hoping it would complement other submissions well:

I am not one-winged (http://akhila.feralscribes.org/2012/i-am-not-one-winged/)

I'm considering submitting a second writing if that is possible (depending on how much content you already have and if I'm respecting the length-limits and such as). It would synthetize my thoughts and past blurbs on gender and therianthropy, the recent debates around the issue of appropriation and such as. I haven't written it yet.

You already know I would love to see that essay on therianthropy and gender. I'd say we absolutely have room for further submissions, and a broader base of submitters. If you do end up writing it and it ends up in line with the submission criteria, I see no reason not to send it in.

And thank you for "I am not one-winged"!

Here are my writings: http://www.werelist.net/forums/showthread.php?t=31106 Of course I'm not submitting the fiction stuff lol. If you need to contact me my email is crazywolf177@gmail.com but I probably won't reply for a while. The author name I want to go by is just Karashoo.

At this point Kara, we're looking for authors to submit specific pieces. Since the committee is doing this in their spare time, we don't generally have time to hunt through an entire website! If you have specific writings you'd like to submit, just link them and we'll take a look, thanks!

Would anyone mind if I linked to this thread over on Beyond Awakening (http://thehornedgate.wordpress.com) to spread the call for submissions around? Or is there a better place to link to, or should I just summarize the idea and provide the contact email?

Feel free to spread it as much as possible, we're still looking for more pieces. Also, just copy/paste the info from here works. Thank you!

I would love to write something to submit for this project, but as much as I love writing, I honestly can't think of a single therianthropy-related topic to write about! I sat down the other day to try; ten minutes later, the blinking cursor on the blank page was still taunting me *laughs*.

If I can think of something, I'd love to submit it -- but I don't think that's going to happen.

Both "I am not One-winged" and "On the Appropriation of Trans* Narratives by Therianthropes" can be found on my website (that's the most updated versions).

(You can put the links in the texts body as footpage notes instead.)

Re: Essay Submission

Hi! I sent an essay to you via email, (from livvy (dot) smith (at) aol (dot) com), yesterday or the day before. Since it's from my AOL account, I thought I'd just be sure you got it! It's a much-edited version of one of my Wordpress blog posts; if you didn't get it, and it's not in your spam, (AOL is evil at times), I'd be glad to edit this post and link to it.

I don't know at all that it's good enough or if it's what you're looking for, but I wanted to give it a try. Thanks!!!

I will definitely be submitting some things to this :D! Would a short essay on my experiences as a newcomer to the community be applicable? Or are you specifically looking for something more introspective about my personal therianthropy?

yourdeer
July 6th, 2013, 06:27 PM
@ Livvy - it's received and submitted to the committee; thank you! :D

@ Obsidian - I think the "experiences as a newcomer" idea would be quite applicable indeed.

Initial deadline is tomorrow! If you have writings that you'd like to submit, now is the time.
Don't hesitate to come to us with questions - if you have something in progress that might not be ready, or that you're unsure of, or would like to nominate someone else's work, please get in touch with us in this subforum, on this thread, or if you'd like to contact us privately you can message me, Elinox, Cheetah or Lemurflight.

Woo, just submitted somethings, and in the nick of time, too. XD

@yourdeer I also just wrote something literally minutes ago on my blog-journal that I think relates, but am not 100% sure would be appropriate for this project. It's also basically un-proof read. You'll have access to it, and I'd love to hear if you think it fits for the project's purpose. (Yanno, and your thoughts too irrespective of this call for submissions role you are playing)
