View Full Version : Site Name (Re-Vote)

(Thank you, Somnia, for the suggestion. :) )

Anyway, here are four names that would probably do well for the site title for the theriomythic site. Just cast your vote here. :) The names were chosen via votes and just in the order of the list that they appeared in. :)

Threw my vote in for The Menagerie, though I wouldn't *ragequit* if any of the other names wins either :p

Voted as well. If I can be of any help I'll stick around (first I need to take care of uni matters and moving to a new place, but I find the project interesting).

And thanks for the votes. :D

Your help is very much welcome. :) And definitely take care of yourself first!

I voted as well. I have been watching your project with interest. Though I am just a plain ol' Corvus onca sapien, I, ah, experience some spiritual/mythic links to who I am... I recently wrote about this over on Animal Quills on DW (I am scatteredshells.) Erm. It's something I could see myself submitting to your site, at any rate. Mythical connections and experiences of a non-mythical ttherian.

I put in my vote for Liminal Wilderness, but it looks like The Menagerie is going to win out. I'm not too fond of it because I've had to work at tearing down "traveling menageries" who mistreated their animals and performed illegal activity where the animals would be forced to fight each other for entertainment (a glamorized dog fighting ring, specifically) in my line of work before... but I guess it's just a name, not a big deal, it just triggers some bad memories.

I have some dislike of the term menagerie, too, primarily dealing with what I know of the origins and forms animal menageries have had, many of them as animal collections kept for superficial reasons, even in the disinterest of the animals' health and well being (granted, zoos have a terrible track record of similar, except mainly habitat zoos). It's probably due to my work and college study in captive animal management that turned me off to the term. Normally I'm not as bothered by the term, but my mind feels resistant to associating it with a deep, personal part of my animality and self =/.

However, I know most people don't have that connotation of it (I assume people here see it as a diverse gathering or 'collection' of animals), so if it ends up the preferred name for the site via vote, I'm okay with it and will support the site regardless of course. I just won't personally vote for it myself.

Yeah... I've been thinking it over a bit more and I'm not sure I'm comfortable associating the term with my personal identity at all. I mean... I'll still help with the site if it's the name everyone wants, but there's always going to be the pain of watching an innocent dog slowly die of blood loss because of the mistreatment caused by people using that term every time I log on to the site, and the history behind that word leaves a trail of blood with all it has stood for in the past.

So at this point I just want... anything else to win, please. :(

That's terrible it's such a triggering word for you, and it's sort of triggery for me, just to a lesser extent and less personal/direct experience based. It surprises me that notably more people don't associate the term with negative things, especially considering the past of animal menageries is riddled with negativity and animal cruelty.

I'm all for us finally getting a consensus on a site name, but we've passed off other names for reasons a lot less intense and serious than this. I just can't agree myself that the best term/phrase for this new theriomythic/animality site should be a term with a large history of referring to animal collections that involved various types of animal cruelty and poor welfare, and existed for showing off how royal and rich people were, or even the 'for exhibition' part, which doesn't look reflective of the new site's goals, purpose, and potential atmosphere. And a member shouldn't have to be negatively triggered with thoughts and sights of animal cruelty every time they go to the site or read/hear about it. Animal menageries aren't and haven't been particularly positive things, but we're sitting here acting like their concept is good enough to be our site name. That just doesn't sit with me well :/.

We just put Betwixt and Between because it seemed the most different out of them all.
Whatever everyone likes best, though.

When I originally suggested the name "Menagerie" I had no idea it was so full of negative connotations for so many people. I have no experience whatsoever in dealing with these real life menageries and didn't know they had such awful reputations; I suppose that's what I get for learning all of my vocabulary straight from the dictionary. >.< While I still enjoy the term, I'd hate for it to make others feel uncomfortable... I just didn't know that it would.

I voted for "The Menagerie". It has a nice fresh vibe to it, and doesn't sound pretentious. I can just imagine the site's look: charcoal black with silvery embroidery, aligned in bold segments with muted greens and earthy tones; crisp lines and finely pieced textures. Mm.

The only negative, if it is a negative, is the pronunciation of the phrase. It took me a couple attempts to get it right. "Men.are.jeer.ee"?

I didn't realize it's got such a negative connotation for some people since it's been mentioned several times within the original thread about the site. =/ If I had known, I would have left it out of the list for consideration. I'm not entirely certain if it's too late to do that now or even how I'd edit out this poll.

It's okay that you didn't know sooner. I don't think Khamaseen and I realized how much the term bothered us for the purpose of being the site title before the poll was created. But thank you for wanting to redo the poll. I think there is an option for 'reset fields' under the 'edit poll' page, which might allow the results to be zeroed out and people can recast their vote (I'm not completely sure because I've never done that option before). Something to try before closing the poll and starting a new thread and poll (but be sure to edit the thread title and original post to let people know they can recast their vote).

You would then need to submit another name in place of the one you wish to cast out, or add more to the list if possible if you want to redo the poll.

I appreciate you taking the time to remake the poll because of mine and Sonne's concerns, and I also would like to thank everyone for taking the time to recast their votes. I should have brought up my concerns about the menagerie as a potential name before it reached the poll, it would have saved time and effort, I apologize for the inconvenience.

Huff, I didn't get to re-vote. (I don't check my emails over the weekend.) I would tend to agree with CloudFoot though in that the winning selection sounds like a Wiccan board to me. Oh well, my one vote wouldn't have changed the end results anyway. Just wanted to note my thoughts for the record.

I'm sorry. =( I voted for another, but I never even thought of that with the name. It's not a big concern of mine, though, because others chose it and like it and no one's stated any sort of severe personal problems with it.

For more clarity's sake, just to indicate the animalistic focus of the site, I'll probably refer to it as "Animality: Betwixt & Between" when I'm mentioning the site/signal boosting about it. But I don't mind the site being called 'Betwixt & Between' (I voted on it, after all), as it does denote that liminal state between 'otherkin' and therian, and doesn't personally strike me as a Pagan/Wiccan site phrase. Anyway, it's good to have a name for the site chosen and gives me something now to refer to the project/future site when I start spreading the word about it soon.

Somnia

Betwixt and Between is an original name, but it makes me think of Twix candy bars, haha! :p Sorry for the silliness but I had to get that out there.

Seriously though, whatever the name of the site will be a good introduction page is more than enough to properly describe what the site is all about. I like Sonne's idea of adding the "Animality" in front of the main title.

Another word of caution if the name "Betwixt and Between" is used, it will important to have a small disclaimer stating the site has nothing to do with Albert Camus's non fiction book "Betwixt and Between."

Hmm, at the moment I'm unsure if I would be able to help, as I currently feel that my volunteer help here at Werelist is enough. I don't want to take on more than I can handle, and for now, Werelist is enough for me to handle at one time. If I do change my mind I will let you know :3
